Deepawali

diwaliDeepawali-one of the most auspicious and significant festivals is also known as “the festival of lights”. The festival represents the victory of good over evil. It is a time to light up the inner lamps with the light of wisdom so that the darkness can be dispelled and the inner brilliance may shine forth.

The auspicious festival of Deepawali has different legends in regard of its celebration. One of them is the most common, i.e., Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya from an exile of 14 years after killing Ravana, a demon king. 3-043098-04309273-914273-914ad44311f_d2578a7e_73da69e8The people of Ayodhya celebrated his arrival by decorating the whole kingdom with lights and earthen lamps. Since then, the festival is celebrated with sweets, lights and fireworks. There is a spiritual significance related to every tradition. Lightening of earthen lamps (diyas) eradicates the darkness of life. Guru says, darkness is a metaphor for ignorance and light represents wisdom. Only with the arrival of God in our life, darkness fades away. To invite God in our life, we must keep repeating-

हे नाथ ! मैं आपको भूलूँ नहीं !

हे नाथ ! मैं आपका हूँ, आप मेरे हैं !

Also, lightening of diyas marks the destruction of negative forces in our lives, like violence, anger, fear, sufferings etc. Only a Spiritual master can help us light up our inner diyas, so that we walk on the path of life with every step illuminated. The purpose is not just to glorify the light of lamps or the brilliance of fireworks, but to glorify the grace of God, by thanking Him and praying for His blessings.

Another story related to Diwali is the defeat of demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna. Narakasura personifies the negative traits of human behavior that obstruct the upliftment of human soul. It was on this day that Lord Krishna killed Narakasura marking the defeat of negativity over positivity. So we celebrate Diwali to pay gratitude to Lord Krishna. The story also teaches that we can win over any opposition in life only with the help of God so our Mentor tells, we must chant God’s Divine name to call upon His grace in our life.

On this Deepawali, let us resolve to light the lamp of God’s name, place it in the temple of our heart, and feed it with the oil of devotion. The earthen diyas can light up our homes for few hours but this lamp made out of love and remembrance of God will illuminate our life forever, eradicating the darkness of thousands of our previous lives.

So life becomes an actual celebration when we remember God and keep on chanting-

हरे कृष्ण, हरे कृष्ण, कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे

हरे राम, हरे राम, राम राम हरे हरे

HAPPY DIWALI !!
